Music and Me!
A multi-faceted music and arts class for EVERYONE!
Music and Me! was developed by a highly motivated team of professinals, including educators, music educators, professional performers, visual artists and parents of children with special needs.
The original intent was to provide a multi-faceted arts class for children with autism and their parents. Music and Me! has proved to be a fantastic way for children on the autism spectrum to participate in music and art studies in a very flexible, accomodating environment. It has helped students, parents and teachers connect on multiple levels, and addresses various learning styles to suit many students. The ide is to meet kids in their "comfort zone" and encourage them to expand their horizons. Lessons may be accomplished with students working with parents or teachers, alone, or with other students.
To date, Music and Me! has been modified for a camp for "At Risk" children, and for a typical music and art appreciation class.
A possible learning session might include these music selections and projects (all facets of the lesson are integrated with the music lesson):
| Auditory | Kinesthetic | Tactile | Visual |
Session 1 | Music of the Beach Boys | Move to the music/beach balls and hula hoops | Sand play | Imagine and make a beachscape |
Session 2 | Big Band | Move to the music/jump rope and hoops | Build and instrument | Create a “Truth Train” |
